Helston

It is the most southerly town in the UK, being marginally south of Penzance by some 3 km. In 2001 the town celebrated the 800th anniversary of the granting of its Charter, making it the second eldest town in Cornwall after Marazion. The town isalso known for its Spring floral dance (The Helston Furry), where the people, in lines, dance through the town, and through the houses. Terry Wogan likes to sing his floral dance song at this.

  • Humphry Millet Grylls Monument, juanito wrote 17 years ago:
Neo-gothic archway of the Humphry Millet Grylls Monument. Was erected in 1834. Grylls was a Helston banker and solicitor who was popular due to securing the funding necessary to keep the Wheal Vor copper mine open and in doing so saving the jobs of more than 1,200 men, women and children. Grylls died on the 17th April 1834 at his home at Bosahan at the age of just forty five. His funeral procession was two miles long and nearly 2 and a half thousand people donated money towards the cost of the memorial.
